Filántropo estadounidense y fundador de la primera escuela para sordos existente en el país. Se graduó en Yale College y posteriormente estudió en Inglaterra y en Francia, donde aprendió el lenguaje de los signos. En 1816 creó la escuela para sordos en Hartford, Conn., que durante más de 50 años sería el principal centro de formación profesional para instructores de sordos del país. La Universidad de Gallaudet, con sede en Washington,
D.C., fue bautizada en su honor.
